Legislature passes bill protecting vaccine access

February 19, 2026 - Immunization - Awareness

SANTA FE – The New Mexico Legislature passed a bill Wednesday night securing the state’s ability to purchase childhood vaccines and require insurance coverage immunizations recommended by state health officials, sending the measure to Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s desk for her signature.

House Bill 156 is vital to the New Mexico Department of Health’s (NMDOH) mission to keep New Mexicans protected from respiratory viruses and other preventable diseases by ensuring NMDOH can purchase vaccines for hundreds of health organizations. These include federally qualified health centers, school-based health centers, public health offices and Indian Health Services.

"We are thankful to the Legislature in ensuring access to vaccines for New Mexicans who want to keep themselves and their loved ones safe,” said Gina DeBlassie, NMDOH secretary.

Residents seeking vaccinations may call their healthcare provider or the NMDOH Helpline at 1-833-SWNURSE (1-833-796-8773) for more information on vaccine availability.
