Maternal Mortality Review Committee

The New Mexico Maternal Mortality Review Committee (MMRC) and its operational staff are housed within the Maternal Health Program of the Family Health Bureau, Public Health Division.

MMRC is a multidisciplinary group that convene to comprehensively review each death that occurs to a New Mexico resident during pregnancy or within one year of the end of a pregnancy. The committee examines causes and contributing factors of each death individually in order to produce recommendations focused on specific and achievable actions that could prevent future deaths.

MMRC operational staff works with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to improve review processes and ensure timely entry of NM data in the CDC Data System, Maternal Mortality Review Information Application (MMRIA). MMRC reports all collected data on maternal morbidity and mortality to CDC.

MMRC Funding Source

MMRC activities are funded by the Enhancing Reviews and Surveillance to Eliminate Maternal Mortality (ERASE MM) grant awarded to NMDOH's Maternal Health Program by CDC. This funding supports MMRC to identify, review, and characterize pregnancy-related deaths; and identify prevention opportunities.

Invitation To Be A Member

The MMRC is composed of volunteers who provide diverse, multidisciplinary expertise in healthcare, social service, public health, and community-based / community-led systems and resources. Members serve 3-year terms and may be eligible for critical income reimbursement to facilitate participation.

We invite New Mexico residents from diverse backgrounds who are strongly committed to preventing maternal deaths and serious pregnancy-related complications and to advancing maternal health across our state. We look to bring together people with different forms of knowledge and experience. We are seeking clinicians and other healthcare professionals, as well as community members, advocates, birth workers, traditional healers, and people directly affected by maternal health challenges.

You do not need to be a licensed healthcare clinician to apply. We value clinical expertise, professional experience, community knowledge, and lived experience as equally important contributions to our work and strategize together to prevent and reduce maternal morbidities and mortality in our state. The work you are applying to be a part of is emotionally intense and time-consuming. The commitments of a committee member include reading each of our relatives' stories, crafting your recommendations for submission, and attending case review meetings at a 75% attendance requirement.

NOTE: Individual responses will be reviewed only by those involved in the selection process. Any public reporting about MMRC membership will use aggregated information whenever possible.
